Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a strategic mutual defense agreement; aggression against one will be considered aggression against both.
Riyadh: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA) to enhance defense cooperation and strengthen joint defense and protection against any aggression. Any act of aggression against one of the two countries will be considered as aggression against both. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman signed the agreement.
According to the statement issued on Wednesday, at the invitation of Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 17 September 2025, 25/3/1447 Hijri. Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud welcomed the Prime Minister of Pakistan at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. The two leaders held a formal session of talks in the presence of delegations from both countries.
At the outset of the talks, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his best wishes for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Both sides reviewed and exchanged views on the historic and strategic relations between the two countries and discussed various matters of mutual interest.
According to the communiqué, in light of the nearly eight-decade-long historic partnership, brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and shared strategic interests, as well as close defense cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif signed the “Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA)” between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
The agreement, which reflects the common commitment of both countries to enhance their security and to contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world, aims to promote defense cooperation and strengthen joint defense and protection against any aggression.
The agreement stipulates that any aggression against one country will be considered aggression against both.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed heartfelt gratitude to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended to him and the Pakistani delegation.
The Prime Minister extended his sincere wishes for continued progress, prosperity, and well-being for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the brotherly people of Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Crown Prince, in turn, conveyed his best wishes for the health and well-being of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and for the further progress and prosperity of the brotherly people of Pakistan.
Earlier, upon arrival at the Royal Court, Qasr Al-Yamamah, for talks with the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was accorded a grand reception. Mounted horse guards escorted the Prime Minister with royal protocol, while Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally welcomed him at the Royal Court. On this occasion, a guard of honor was also presented to the Prime Minister by contingents of the Saudi Armed Forces.
