T-Chowk Flyover Project Will Be a Milestone for Citizens of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Surrounding Areas:Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said that the T-Chowk Flyover project will prove to be a milestone for the citizens of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and the surrounding areas. He added that the proposed railcar project will bring further ease to the residents of the twin cities, and no compromise will be made on quality in the completion of development projects.

He expressed these views on Friday while addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of the flyover at T-Chowk, Rawat, located at the junction of GT Road and Islamabad Expressway.

The ceremony was attended by federal ministers, parliamentarians, the administration of the federal capital, CDA officials, and representatives of other concerned departments.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister termed the T-Chowk Flyover project a welcome development, stating that the one-kilometer-long flyover would facilitate connectivity between the Expressway and other areas.

He appreciated the efforts of the Interior Minister and CDA officials for the project, reiterating that there would be no compromise on quality in the execution of development schemes.

The Prime Minister further stated that Pakistan will host the SCO Summit in 2027, for which preparations must begin now. He directed that Islamabad be further beautified and informed that Tajikistan had gifted various types of plants, which would enhance the city’s beauty. He said that work was already underway to beautify Constitution Avenue, and in a few weeks, beautiful flowers would bloom along its sides.

The Prime Minister said that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi were working on a new transport project for Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The proposed railcar project, he added, would provide further convenience to the residents of the twin cities.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that besides the Metro Bus Service, EV transport had been introduced for environmental protection. He directed CDA and the district administration to work diligently to improve connectivity between the twin cities, enhance the city’s beauty, and provide better civic facilities to the citizens.

Earlier, the Prime Minister unveiled the plaque and laid the foundation stone of the project.

Addressing the ceremony, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that the Expressway was completed a few months ago, and the T-Chowk Flyover would be inaugurated within 150 days. He assured that the given targets would be achieved while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

The Prime Minister was briefed that the T-Chowk Flyover project would cost Rs. 1.495 billion and be completed in a short span of 150 days. The Islamabad Expressway is a key artery of the federal capital that links Rawalpindi, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and the GT Road. The CDA has already made the Islamabad Expressway signal-free from Zero Point to T-Chowk.

The GT Road T-Chowk Rawat junction is an important entry point to the federal capital but is currently under heavy traffic pressure and in a dilapidated condition. Both light and heavy traffic exert immense pressure on this junction.

Considering this situation, the CDA started work on the project. The right-of-way issue between the CDA and NHA was resolved, and on June 5, 2025, the NHA issued an NOC to the CDA. Around 100,000 vehicles pass through this junction daily, and with the construction of the flyover, approximately 41,572 vehicles will have ease of movement every day.

For the convenience of travelers coming from Lahore and other areas of Punjab to Islamabad via GT Road, the design of the flyover was prepared by NESPAK. The flyover will be over one kilometer long, with a width of 11.30 meters. It will also feature streetlights and landscaping for beautification.
