Closure Ceremony of Balakot Hydropower Project Marks Major Milestone in Pakistan’s Clean Energy Journey

Balakot :The closure ceremony of the Balakot Hydropower Project, a flagship clean energy initiative of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was held today, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s transition toward renewable energy.

The 300-megawatt (MW) project, being implemented by the China Energy Engineering Group (Energy China) through its subsidiary Gezhouba Third Engineering Co., Ltd., represents one of the largest hydropower undertakings in the province.

Senior representatives from both Pakistan and China attended the ceremony, including Mr. Mao Huigang, Executive General Manager of China Energy Engineering Group EPC Company and General Manager of Gezhouba Third Engineering Co., Ltd., and Mr. Li Lipei, Project Manager of the Balakot Project Department.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mao Huigang reaffirmed Energy China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s sustainable development goals and enhancing bilateral cooperation in the power sector. He highlighted that projects like Balakot demonstrate the strength of the Pakistan–China energy partnership under the vision of green and shared development.

Mr. Li Lipei underscored the importance of timely execution and technological excellence in ensuring the project’s success, adding that the Balakot Hydropower Project will set a benchmark for future clean energy collaborations between the two countries.

The project is expected to generate 300 MW of clean and green electricity, significantly contributing to Pakistan’s energy mix while reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Once operational, it will provide affordable power to millions of consumers, boosting energy security and supporting the country’s broader shift toward a greener, more sustainable economy.

The ceremony concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared vision for expanding renewable energy cooperation and ensuring that the Balakot Hydropower Project serves as a model for future Pakistan–China infrastructure and energy collaborations.
