Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Sentenced to Over 27 Years in Prison

Brasilia: Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been handed a prison sentence of 27 years and three months after the Supreme Federal Court convicted him on charges related to an attempted coup.

On Thursday, Justices Carmen Lucia and Cristiano Zanin cast their votes to convict Bolsonaro, securing a majority on the five-member panel.

The 70-year-old former president was found guilty on five counts: plotting a coup d’état, attempting to violently abolish democratic rule of law, participating in an armed criminal organization, aggravated property damage, and deterioration of heritage sites.

The trial began on September 2. Earlier in the week, Justices Alexandre de Moraes and Flavio Dino also ruled in favor of conviction, while Justice Luiz Fux voted for acquittal.

Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest, can still appeal the verdict to the full bench of the Supreme Federal Court, consisting of 11 justices.
