Xi Jinping to Attend BRICS Leaders Virtual Meeting at Lula’s Invitation

Brasília/Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping will participate in the BRICS Leaders Virtual Meeting on September 8, following an invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday.

According to a spokesperson, President Xi will join the summit via video link from Beijing and is scheduled to deliver an important policy address during the proceedings. The meeting will bring together the leaders of BRICS member states to exchange views on key issues of global governance, economic cooperation, and sustainable development.

Observers say the virtual summit is significant as BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — seek to strengthen their collective role in international affairs amid shifting global dynamics. Discussions are expected to cover trade ties, financial collaboration, reform of multilateral institutions, and coordination on pressing global challenges, including climate change and food security.

China has emphasized the importance of BRICS cooperation in promoting a more inclusive and balanced international order, and Xi’s address is likely to outline Beijing’s vision for deepening unity among member states.

The summit comes at a time when Brazil is playing an active role in hosting and coordinating multilateral engagements, with President Lula repeatedly highlighting the bloc’s potential as a counterweight to traditional Western-led institutions
